Why do a Trunk or Treat?

We started Trunk or Treat a few years ago at Concordia. We wanted to show love to the children in our congregation. We wanted to provide an opportunity for the adults and children to interact with one another. We also decided to do it because parents told us they use any excuse for their kids to dress up in October because they spent so much on the costume.

There are a few things that make our Trunk or Treat different from others. First, we don’t care if your trunk is decorated. Seriously, I have my husband open our trunk and it’s whatever junk is normally in there. There are some who have beautifully decorated trunks and I personally get excited seeing them; I’m sure the kids do too. The second, more important reason is we try to get our children and adults to interact. We’ve done this by using questionnaires for older kids to fill out about the adults giving them candy. For younger and shyer children, we asked that both the adults and children share names with each other.

In 2020, we decided to have a collection of treats and make treat bags for the children in the congregation. This year, for 2021, we would like to host our Trunk or Treat. It will be different. Since we have two services instead of one, we’ll host Trunk or Treat during the Sunday School and Bible Study hour from 10:15-10:45. This will give most people the opportunity to attend the Trunk or Treat. We won’t encourage the same level of interaction this year; but we still encourage children and adults to share their names with each other. We want the children and adults in our congregation to learn the names of members in their church family. Pastor and I are excited for our congregation to celebrate this event together. We ask those willing to hand out treats to sign up, so we know how many parking spots we will need to block off at the back of the church parking lot on Sunday, October 31st. We also ask those passing out treats to make sure the treats are in sealed packages. If anyone wants to pass out treats, but forgets to bring them, we will have treats to share. We’re hoping to show love to 30 children throughout our congregation and their friends. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Shadday at church or at 314-330-3782.
